Haile Selassie I, was an Ethiopian regent from 1916 to 1930 and emperor from 1930 to 1974. He is a defining figure in contemporary Ethiopian history born July 23, 1892, Ejersa Goro, Ethiopia and assassinated August 27, 1975 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He is also a symbolic figure in the  Rastafari movement or Rasta religion in the Caribbean which emerged out of Jamaica. In the Rasta religion, Haile Selassie I, is seen as their messiah as he visited the island of Jamaica on Thursday, April 21, 1966. Many oppressed people of the island started a movement the movement rejected the fact they a black man cannot have a white messiah due to oppression and racism caused by slavery at the hands of the white man and on his visit to Jamaica saw him as the messiah. Haile Selassie I is synonymous with Bob Marley, reggae music, Marcus Garvey and marijuana smoking in the Rastafari movement. Haile Selassie I which in english translated “Power of the Trinity,” born Lij Tafari Makonnen Woldemikael was a member of the Solomonic Dynasty who traced his lineage to Emperor Menelik I via his Shewan royal ancestors as a great-grandson of king Sahle Selassie daughter of Sahle Selase was mother of Woldemikael. Haile Selassie’s father was Makonnen Wolde-Mikael Guddisa and his mother was Yeshimebet Mikael (Daughter of Ras Ali of Bete Amhara/Wollo). His internationalist views led to Ethiopia becoming a charter member of the United Nations, and his political thought and experience in promoting multilateralism and collective security have proved seminal and enduring. At the League of Nations in 1936, the emperor condemned the use of chemical weapons by Italy against his people during the Second Italo–Ethiopian War. His suppression of rebellions among the landed aristocracy (the mesafint), which consistently opposed his reforms, as well as what some critics perceived to be Ethiopia’s failure to modernize rapidly enough, earned him criticism among some contemporaries and historians. During his rule the Harari people were persecuted and many left the Harari Region. His regime was also criticized by human rights groups, such as Human Rights Watch, as autocratic and illiberal. Among the Rastafari movement, whose followers are estimated to number between 700,000 and one million, Haile Selassie I is revered as the returned messiah of the Bible, God incarnate. Beginning in Jamaica in the 1930s, the Rastafari movement perceives Haile Selassie as a messianic figure who will lead a future golden age of eternal peace, righteousness, and prosperity. Haile Selassie was an Ethiopian Orthodox Christian throughout his life. The 1973 famine in Ethiopia led to Haile Selassie’s eventual removal from the throne. He died on 27 August 1975 at the age of 83, following a coup d’état.

Most Eritrean and Ethiopian people look alike and the two countries has similar history and are neighboring countries of East Africa however most Eritreans do not like to be mistaken for Ethiopians. This may have stem from the war between the two countries that happened decades ago during the time of Haile Selassie I. This may also be because of The Eritrean–Ethiopian War, one of the conflicts in the Horn of Africa, took place between Ethiopia and Eritrea from May 1998 to June 2000, with the final peace only agreed to in 2018, twenty years after the initial confrontation.

Nipsey Hussle and Haile Selassie I have East African roots and are northeast African descendants. Both are legends and are people loved universally in the world and are also look alikes with a similar past and demise. Both fought for a cause had a warrior spirit. Ethiopia and Eritrea share a similar land and a similar heritage.
